Jane Crouch's Profile

About Jane Crouch

This is how Jane is a Changemaker:
Positive interactions between individuals of different cultures is a wonderful way to build understanding and peace and harmony in the world. In my role with small group adventure operater, Intrepid Travel, through my role of helping to implement appropriate responsible travel practices, I'm in a position of being able to help facilitate great experiences between visitors and locals. Through the establishment of the Intrepid Foundation, I've also been able to help pave the way for travellers to contribute back effectively to local communities they visit. I've undertaken studies in International Development in the last 6 years, to help me learn the most sustainable and empowering approaches to community support.

The place for which Jane feels a fondness or connection:
As a traveller - too many to list...but stand outs include in the Nepali and Indian Himalaya, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and recent visits to indigenous communities in Northern Australia - from whom I have so much to learn.

The change Jane passionately wants to happen:
Much greater equity in the world, through the reduction of excessive and wasteful consumption of limited resources, which is often at the expense of the poor. A dramatic reduction in energy usage, that enables us to turn around climate change and help my generation leave the next a decent legacy. Elimination of human and animal rights abuses and a halt to clearing of old growth forest. A cure for malaria, HIV and other major diseases...Now what's the word limit here?!

Bio

Jane is the Responsible Travel Manager for Intrepid Travel. Intrepid Travel operates affordable small group adventures, currently in 95 countries throughout Asia, Australasia, Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Latin America. Intrepid aims to operate its trips in a way that both respects and benefits local people, their culture and the environment. Jane has been with Intrepid for 12 years, starting as a group leader in Vietnam and Borneo in 1996. She's passionate about travelling in a way that's positive and rewarding for all those involved. After leading about 65 trips and having countless memorable experiences, Jane hung up the backpack in early 2000 to take up her current position based out of Intrepid's Melbourne head office. The position includes working with staff to implement Intrepid's Responsible Travel Code of Conduct around the globe, helping manage Intrepid's Carbon Reduction initiatives and generally doing whatever's possible to help ensure Intrepid is practicing what they preach. Jane researched and ran several Intrepid trips to Timor-Leste - an opportunity to set up a model of sustainable tourism in the world's newest nation. In 2002 Jane established The Intrepid Foundation Inc, providing travellers and Intrepid Travel with a unique opportunity to provide support to grass roots community development projects. Jane’s adventures include extensive travels through Asia and Africa and a 1500km walk around the Victorian coastline. In 2006 Jane used her long service leave to work as personal assistant to the then First Lady of Timor-Leste, Kirsty Sword Gusmao, based at the Alola Foundation in Dili, which works to help support women and their families.
