Freie Universität Berlin is one of the leading universities in Germany and distinguishes itself through its modern and international character. After the completion of the last round of the excellence competition in October
2007 the Freie Universität is one of the nine "universities of excellence" in the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the internationally relevant ranking of The Times Higher Education Supplement, the humanities at Freie Universität are the best in Germany. The Funding Rankings of the German Research Foundation place the humanities at Freie Universität in first place and the natural sciences in fourth place. It has some 35,000 students and 350 professors, excluding Medicine. The University has 11 departments structured into more than 70 institutes, plus the Medical Faculty Charité, made up of the former medical departments of Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität.

The Department of Educational Science is also the top rated in the country. The area of study Inclusive Education, Sport and Physical Education is especially active in community service and research working on a variety of themes from women's leadership in international sports organisations (for which it won the Margheritha-von-Brentano-Preise 2005), talent identification in Paralympic sport, access to sporting opportunities for athletes with a disability, sport governance, social inclusion through sport and social entrepreneurship.
