The World Centre of Excellence for Destinations (CED) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to guide destinations around the world toward excellence by:
Developing their competitiveness;
Facilitating the achievement of their sustainable development objectives;
Improving the quality of the experience offered to tourists;
Strengthening the geographic character of destinations, which includes their environment, their culture, their aesthetics, their heritage, and the well-being of their inhabitants;
Delivering strategic information on the major issues related to destinations.
Created in December 2006, the CED is an organization recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with which it is linked through a memorandum of agreement.
The mandate of the CED consists of gathering, promoting, disseminating and developing tourist destinations’ expertise through a worldwide network of partners.
The World Centre of Excellence for Destinations is an innovative and powerful tool created to assist the UNWTO in supporting its affiliated/associated members, particularly destinations, in their efforts to foster sustainable development and increase their abilities to generate economic, social and cultural spin-off benefits.
Following its mandate, the CED enthusiastically supports the Geotourism Challenge and invites all destinations to be part of the effort to improve our world through tourism.
