Geotourism means to also focus on human welfare and advancement, in contrast to solely environmental-focused welfare/wellbeing. This is what Rios Tropicales has been quietly doing since the company’s founding in 1985. The genesis of Rios Tropicales’ geotourism efforts came from complementary goals of wanting to protect and conserve the rivers and rainforests of Costa Rica while empowering and engaging the local community members, including the native Cabecar Indians, to play leading roles in this effort for their own economic, educational, health, and soulful well-being.

Based in Nepal, 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking (3 Sisters) was founded in 1994 to empower and employ rural women in adventure travel. Lucky Chhetri felt the impact of mountaineering training in her own life and wanted to share the feeling of strength and possibility with others. Responding to the gross inequality of women in Nepal, 3 Sisters founded a local NGO, Empowering Women of Nepal (EWN). Together, they offer unprecedented opportunities for women from poor, remote mountainous regions to become confident, self-sufficient, and successful through adventure tourism.

The Great Baikal Trail will allow access to parts of Lake Baikal that are now beyond the reach of most visitors. Only five percent of the lakeshores are developed, with very few roads anywhere. We would like to keep it that way. Therefore, to avoid industrial development, and to preserve our cultural and natural environments intact, we Siberians are intent on limiting access to most of our lake to only hikers, bikers, skiers, horseback riders, etc.
