The place for which Sanjay Kumar feels a fondness or connection:
Over the past decade this Jammu and Kashmir has seen a lot of turmoil, inspite of this fact it maintains the distinction of being the pride and is indeed The Crown of India. Set like an incredibly jeweled crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a many-faceted diamond, changing its character with the seasons always extravagantly beautiful. Three Himalayan ranges Karakoram, Zanskar and Pir Panjal - snow-capped, majestic, frame the landscape from northwest to northeast. They are the birthplace of great rivers which flow down into the valleys below, forested with wild orchards and lily laden lakes. When we start our voyage from Jammu, the winter capital of the state Jammu and Kashmir, lends an interesting and enriching insight into its past glory. These provinces surrounded by 22 hilly states which were free from all bondage, later on united to from the most important part of this state, known by the name of “Dogra Raj”. But in the midst of these transitions, there lies a part of old Jammu city which is a silent witness to all the changes. “Mubarak Mandi” as it is known as, is a collection of innumerable palaces which have been an integral part of “Dogra Raj” over thousands of years. Besides the paintings there are documents available in museum which connects Jammu The Ramayana and The Mahabharata days. The remains of some temples and palaces are clearly evident of the above facts. 35 kms away from Jammu one can see a number of temples of ancient days. It is believed that the famous temple of Babour belongs to ‘Babrowahan’ the son of Arjuna of Mahabharata. Inspite of this fact the skeptics are even doubtful over its real identity. These temples are divided into 2 parts ‘Kaldehra-1’ and ‘Kaldehra-2’. The two ‘Kaldehra’ supposedly devices its origin from the ‘Mahakal’. About 25 Kms away from Jammu, a small village called ‘Krinchi’ is located with the remains of ancient temples like the temples of Babor. The temples of Krinchi reflect the glory of the architectural beauty of Orissa and Southern India. It is especially influenced by the architectural exuberance of the ‘Lingraj temple’ of Orissa. People staying here are of the belief that the ‘Pandavas’ of Mahabharata times had constructed these temples during their ‘Agyatwas’ but the historians clearly deny this. There are three fresh water springs at Patnitop and it is believed that the waters here are medicinal. There are facilities for those interested in pony rides and camping activities. Most tour packages to Patnitop include packages that offer trips to these medicinal springs. Patnitop is an ideal region that serves as a base for tourist who treks to the nearby mountains. Special skiing courses are conducted at Patnitop for travelers. Most tour packages offer tourists amateur ski courses, including equipment and facilities for skiing and other outdoor activities. Tours and travels to Patnitop include a visit to Sudh Mahadev. It is one of the sacred Hindu pilgrimages. The walk to Shiva Garh is also an exciting activity. A pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is considered to be one of the holiest pilgrimages of our times. Popularly there is a belief and call this Shrine as Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata, which means, the Mother who fulfills whatever Her children wish for. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji resides in a Holy Cave located in the folds of the three peaked mountain named Trikuta. The Holy Cave attracts lakhs of devotees every year. In fact, the number of devotees visiting the Holy Shrine annually now exceeds 5 million. This is due to the unflinching faith of the devotees who throng the Shrine from all parts of India and abroad. The Holy Cave of the Mother is situated at an altitude of 5200 ft. The devotees have to undertake a trek of nearly 12 km from the base camp at Katra. At the culmination of their pilgrimage, the devotees are blessed with the Darshans of the Mother Goddess inside the Sanctum Sanctorum- the Holy Cave. These Darshans are in the shape of three natural rock formations called the Pindies. There are no statues or idols inside the Cave. Darshans are open round the clock throughout the year. Provisions for activities aimed at making the trek a comfortable and satisfying experience for the devotees have been organised. Since the year 1986, when the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board commonly called Shrine Board was formed under “The Jammu & Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1986’. The management of the Shrine and regulation of the Yatra has been vested in the Board. The Board has undertaken a number of developmental activities aimed at making the travel a comfortable and satisfying experience for the devotees. So far, over 125 crores of rupees have been invested by the Board for providing various infrastructural and other facilities. The Board continues to reinvest the offerings and donations received in carrying out improvements in various kinds of facilities. Hence the shrine has been an important economic boost to the state. Although terrorism has engulfed certain areas of this region these days, yet people stand tall with conviction opportunism and are progressing. Apart from Jammu, terrorism has cast its spell severely even in Kashmir for so many years. But the tradition and cultural beliefs have not been affected and have remained as pure and beautiful as ever. Unlike Jammu, which is known for its geographical and cultural specialties, Kashmir is known for its natural beauty worldwide. Kashmir also called as Ghati is believed that it was borne by Kashyap Rishi. Kashmir has one National highway Road which connects the state to the rest part of the country. Frequent air services can also be availed to reach various cities. Recently the state has the privilege to extend the railway services from Jammu to the Kashmir valley. The rich fertile soil of Kashmir and its ever increasing productivity of edible substances has made Kashmir a part of international economy along with its marvelous natural beauty. The best quality saffron in the world comes from Kashmir. The local inhabitants are much dependent upon these products for their living. Kashmir is situated at the bank of river Jhelum. Muslim community makes the majority of the population of Kashmir. Today Kashmir has outgrown many cities and towns in terms of social, political and economical aspects. Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir inhabits the experience of living in a developed tourist place. Excellent hotels and restaurants add comfort to living. In the heart of the city Srinagar flows the famous ‘Dal Lake’, which is a gift of nature in the lap of the valley. The lake is 6 Kms long and about 3 Kms wide. The lake has been divided into 4 parts. Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Babd Dal and Najin. It is the most fascinating experience any one can have. One can avail “Shikaras” a boat like water vessels to glide over the cool waters of the Dal Lake. These “Shikaras” are the examples of rare artistic beauty. Decorated with colourful curtains, Shikaras provide immense pleasure and delight to its travelers. For easy availability of daily necessities people have made small markets and shops in Dal Lake. It is quite amazing but it is true indeed ! How important Dal is for the Kashmirs, one cannot easily estimate. Its small dreams, wishes and happiness sailing smoothly and quietly as a silent spectator on the tiny waves of the DAL. Jammu and Kashmir is not only home to the vast cultural and ethnic diversity but also the myriad arts and crafts that have been carefully nurtured for the centuries. A variety of motifs, techniques and crafts flourished in the land as the people from different regions flocked through this beautiful place and many of the skilled craftsmen decided to settle amidst its charming abundance of natural beauty. With time, these arts have gained even more distinctiveness and today Kashmir is known for woolen textiles, Pashmina shawls, embroidered suits, Kashmir silk saris, papier mache, woodcarving, hand knotted carpets and lots of other traditional crafts. The Gathering is an interfaith weekly event honoring and celebrating our common heart, common spirit, common earth, and our rich diversity within our collective unity...not a church or religion, but a non-exclusive, non-traditional gathering of spiritually oriented, peace and justice loving people who wish to participate in a community of creativity in music and the arts, in spoken word and dialogue, and in reaching out to each other with love and non-violence, addressing concerns, empowering positive action all wrapped in the tri coloured flag protecting the national emblem. I stand there in a momentary silence, The picture that I see impressed upon my mind, I wonder if God painted this picture just for me, A gift for me that’s only mine. With the Heads held high The pride of the Nation Indeed The Crown of India
