About Ann Donaca-Sullivan

This is how Ann is a Changemaker:
Throughout my life, educating and helping others has always been a passion of mine. After graduating from college, I taught for one year and then ventured to Poland, gathering information regarding World War Two and the concentration camps. From there, I worked with Palestinians and Israelis on creating peaceful relations. At many points, there were Christians, Jews, and Arabs together traveling from place to place. It made such an impact on my life that I returned to Israel / Palestine six years later and continued my quest. While working globally I began to see the value of educating children locally at an early age. My focus on making a change in the world has graduated to children with disabilities. What can be done to include everyone in society? Having a son with Down syndrome, has given me opportunities to explore options in a personal realm.

The place for which Ann feels a fondness or connection:
My grandmother, "Grammie", is 91 years old. She's my best friend; the person who has made the largest influence on my life. Her home brings forth a feeling of connection and fondness each time I enter the door. Smells of cookies and baked bread fill the air. Grammie and I spend one day a week together, playing cribbage, talking, and laughing. There is always a sense of safety, warmth, and encouragement. We have created memories together which will last forever.

The change Ann passionately wants to happen:
Children learn the ground rules of interacting as societal members through play. Unfortunately, children with disabilities are often literally left behind, watching their friends from the sidelines. In order for people with disabilities to be fully recognized as equals in the community, they must be able to fully participate. When children learn that all people, regardless of their differences, can share activities and experiences together, they can carry that lesson forward for a lifetime. This is the change I passionately want to see happen.
