Maggie Gurman's Profile

About Maggie Gurman

This is how Maggie is a Changemaker:
I work for a non-profit organization that promotes cross cultural friendship through teaching exchange. The exchange of ideas and cultures broadens an individual's experiences, increases their awareness of the world and their place in it and fosters an open mind. I currently am also persuing my master's degree in social work, which studies the person in environment and how to help an individual or community make necessary changes in the context of their reality. On an individual level, I always try to share and recieve knowledge, to show someone the other side(s) of the story, or issue.

The place for which Maggie feels a fondness or connection:
La ciudad de la Habana. The city has an energy unlike any other place I've been. A culture and unlikely counter culture thrive despite an opressive regime. I met some amazingly inspiring people in Havana - Cubans and Americans alike.

The change Maggie passionately wants to happen:
I am currently researching domestic violence - causes, psychological effects, barriers to treatment etc. This is an issues I want to understand inside and out, prevent, treat and/ or intervene on any level. The prevelence of domestic violence is astounding (1 out of every 4 women will experience it in their lives). And like many other issues, it effects those who are already struggling even more and becomes not just an issue of gender, but one of race, ethnicity and class as well.
