Jim Coffey's Profile

About Jim Coffey

This is how Jim is a Changemaker:
I have a passion for looking at half empty glasses as half full. I thrive in creating programs where everyone involved can win, win, win. I am concerned with the state and well being of our planet and its people. I see opportunity where others see problems. I believe in action... right now. Put all of the above ingredients in the "mixing bowl of life..... ADD WATER..." I am a Changemaker.

The place for which Jim feels a fondness or connection:
I am fond of many places..... but I currently feel most connected in the small rural village of Jalcomulco, Veracruz, Mexico. Despite the world class adventures my company operates in the region it is the friendships, contact and connection with the people in the community that really makes this place special.

The change Jim passionately wants to happen:
I feel that tourism is often a "double edged sword" with both a positive and potentially negative edge to it. I want to create, teach, and inspire ways that tourism operations (starting with my own) can brandish the positive and avoid as much as possible the negative. I believe that having both "passion and principles" is the new recipe for sustainable success.

Bio

Twenty five years ago I took "a year off from school" to find "fame and fortune" as an adventure travel guide. Although fortune in our industry is somewhat elusive we have been able to amass a considerable amount of notoriety for the quality and calibre of the trips we run. I started Esprit in 1992 with a mere $500 and a burning desire to "run the world's greatest whitewater trips". That dream was realized just 15 years later... in October of 2007 Esprit was recognized by National Geographic Adventurer's "Best Outfitters on Earth Survey" as the World's #1 Whitewater Operation and second overall of all Eco-Adventure Tour Companies. Most importantly we were awarded top honours of companies surveyed for our "Sustainability" policies and practices. I believe we have now pushed the bar to new level for all outfitters to follow and perhaps surpass. I believe that a new era in the Tourism Industry is upon us, where responsibility and action both socially and environmentally will guide us to a greater good.
