Saida Ali 's Profile

About Saida Ali

This is how Saida is a Changemaker:
I believe in the advancement of the rights of women and everything I do at work, my career path and any voluntary activity I am involved in is geared towards improving the status of women and girls in society.

The place for which Saida feels a fondness or connection:
I have a fondness for water bodies; the East African ocean. The water calms me down, it instills a lot of peace and it is not only beautiful but also strongly connects me to nature. Seeing all those beautiful corals and other sea creatures in water is so amazingly beautiful.

The change Saida passionately wants to happen:
A world where the rights of women are both a means and an end to development. The convergence of minds and ideas to create a great network of women leaders in Africa. The use of the stories of women who are change makers yet invisible for the younger generation to emulate and promote transformative leadership.

Bio

I am currently the Executive Director of the Young Women's Leadership Institute. My work experience includes working a Field Officer for CARE International in Kenya at the Dadaab refugee camps in North Eastern Kenya. This was on a project on elimination of female genital cutting among the Somali refugees. I have done several consultancy jobs with human rights organisations on work on gender, women's rights and advocacy. I worked as a Research Assistant for the Heinrich Boll Foundation for a book project on Mapping out of Best Practices on Women's Rights in Kenya. I was a Resource Person for Ford Foundation for a project dubbed 'Nairobi+21' which was reflecting on 21 years after the Women's Conference in Nairobi (1985). I was a part of the team that reviewed Ford Foundation's work in the East African region for the last 21 years and my contribution was in assessing the involvement of the younger generation in advancing the rights of women. The book documenting that process is out and another book that outlines the Ford Foundation sector reviews will be by the end of this year.
