About colin hunt

This is how colin is a Changemaker:
My role as an activity mentor challenges anti-social behaviour head on! The post is funded by Positive Futures which is a social inclusion program linked in with the home office'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">home office. My work with young people and the impact it has made on their lives has recently been shown on BBC national news on 28th September 07(this can be evidenced on dvd) The young people I work with can come from 3 referral streams, Response - a free and confidential service advice and information working with vulnerable young people from 13 to 19 years of age, specializing in substance and alcohol mis-use, benefits and housing and welfare, support and counselling, crisis support, drugs and alcohol advice in a 121 or group setting, well-being, education (NEET) and outreach. Y.O.T. - Youth Offending Service primary functions are to provide active interventions to young people aged between 8 to 18 years of age who are identified as being at risk or involved with criminal activity or causing anti-social behaviour. C.A.M.H.s - Children and Adolescents with Mental Health is a PCT scheme with specialist interventions at Tier 4 level (an example of this can be cannabis psychosis) using exercise as an alternative for drug use. My role offers these young people a life line to change their lives using sport and exercise as an alternative where it will make a difference.

The place for which colin feels a fondness or connection:
Building relationships takes a lot of time and commitment but it really matters! The best approaches involve listening to young peoples ideas and helping them turn thier ambitions into reality. Working in partnership with the support of local organisations like the Police, the DAAT and the Anti-Social behaviour / Youth Service Outreach Team, who provide funds for the activities which are paramount to the success of the initiative and allow us to constructively deliver the activities. Its about building strong relationships of trust and respect with young people so that we can help them turn their lives around and make the most of the opportunities around them.

The change colin passionately wants to happen:
So very often young people are given false promises and led into a false sense of security! My view is that building relationships of mutual trust and respect is a two way thing and it is important that this trust is consistent and not broken in any way. We should act as role models and adopt a 'practice what I preach' scenario. My idea is an initiative using a series of outdoor education activities planned to get young people away from their local communities where they may normally hang out, giving them a chance to get away from their normal environment and ('if you like, take them out of their comfort zones!) The eventual outcomes will be used as evidence towards the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme - that is the plan?

Bio

I have 7 years of experience working in the field of youth engagement within a sports development background, as a youth sports co-ordinator. During the past 3 years employed with Positive Futures i have worked with the most challenging cases of disengaged young people aged between 11 and 19 years of age, using sport and exercise as an alternative to drug, alcohol and substance mis-use, acting as a link to alternative education programs having a positive impact on young peoples transition into adulthood. Positive Futures latest report states "Tackling drugs - Changing lives" and this is what we pride ourselves in achieving.
