Project Description:
Global Citizens Network recognizes the interdependence of people around the world, and that social and economic injustice, racial and ethnic inequality, and ecological loss affect all people. Through cooperative effort, individuals of all cultures can experience and enhance their ability to make a difference in their community and their world. To foster that cooperation, Global Citizens Network sends short-term teams of volunteers to communities in other cultures where participants immerse themselves in the culture and daily life of the community. Each volunteer team is partnered with a local grassroots organization active in meeting local needs. Global Citizens Network creates a worldwide network of people and organizations committed to addressing global issues.

lindastuart's Story:
Family volunteering is a concrete way to share ideas about family values with each other as well as form a team within a team. Kids naturally open doors in communities – the GCN trip is a collaborative effort to expose kids to other cultures and service. Recently I traveled with my six year old daughter Ananda to Mexico for three reasons: to share with her my belief that giving isn’t a privilege but rather a way of life; to integrate her into my work of responsible exchanges and alternative tourism; and to show her in person that 90% of the world does not live as we do and their lives are so rich! Ananda in turn taught me to have unconditional compassion for others. Upon return, we shared our stories with anyone and everyone who would listen. Our awareness for the world beyond our world was enhanced by that one week experience together. We had quality time to get to know each other. An overwhelming sense of belonging came over me as I watched Ananda I play hide- and -seek with the Nahua children of Xiloxochico. It truly was a great reminder of the “oneness” and humanity that binds us all.
