Reality Tours, Global Exchange nominated by : Malia Everette | April 21, 2008
Country: United States
Organization: Global Exchange
Website: www.globalexchange.org
Project Description:
The idea that travel can be educational and positively influence international affairs motivated the first Reality Tour in 1989. Reality Tours educate people about how we, individually and collectively, contribute to global problems, and, then, to suggest ways in which we can contribute to positive change. They offer participants an opportunity to journey to other countries to examine a situation first-hand, to see beyond what is communicated by the mass media. By joining us on one of these socially responsible delegations, participants have the chance to learn about unfamiliar cultures, meet with people from all walks of life, and establish meaningful relationships with people from other countries. Thus for 20 years Reality Tours have promoted alternative, educational travel as a way to replace feelings of apathy with a sense of empowerment.
Malia Everette's Story:
I have worked at Global Exchange myself for 11 years. I am constantly motivated by the passion, advocacy, heart and common sense of my coworkers. I am constantly supported and challenged by my Executive Director and the dynamic multifaceted board of Global Exchange. It may sound a bit too self-confident or arrogant to "self" nominate but I feel compelled to. I do so because I feel a professional commitment to do so to the over 100 people we call program officers in over 35 countries and in the US. I'd like to state that the ethos of human connection are truly inspired by Reality Tours. I know this being the Director but most importantly, almost 20 years a go, this intrepid backpacker and Grad Student took her first Reality Tour to Cuba . It changed the course of my life. I never lived, worked or traveled the same. I am honored to assist thousands of people annually "meet the people, learn the facts, and make a difference!".
