I was just introduced to this entry...fantastic idea! I would have done anything as a young boy to get the chance to fly. I'm curious as well to hear how the young men have responded to the museum dollar arrangement. Also how do you get new recruits? How do you identify your at-risk youth or is it self-selection?
We don't currently recruit because we haven't received enough funding for full time staff. We rely heavily on volunteers, and have many kids from word of mouth. It is self-selection. Since Compton residents are mostly low income, partipants that find us are typically at risk. We do require all new enrollments to fill out a residency and income form. We request proof of income from everyone, but don't always get it.
Hello Myra,
Incredible work! Great impact and totally innovative approach for engaging these youth. Fantastic! You mention that one the Aviation Angels reaches one million members you plan on approaching the U.S. government. Do you, at present, have any existing relationship with local, state or national government?
What is the response from the youth in terms of the museum dollars? Are you also teaching some kind of money management skills?
Our only current relationship with the government is through Congresswoman Laura Richardson's office & the late Congresswoman McDonald's office.
The youth learn sweat equity through museum dollars, and some naturally have a lot more credit than others.
We don't currently teach money management skills.
Thanks for sharing.
