What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence? Integrate educational activities with sports at the Foundation Gol de Letra in a public school building.
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field? The School Project – Sports Action promotes the integration between the Foundation Gol de Letra, 4 public schools and the community through the participation of the students we serve, the members of the school and the residents of the communities. This proposal foresees the direct involvement of the children in the planning, executing and evaluation of the activities – in addition to developing their values and social skills. Therefore, aside from the direct benefit of the practice of physical sports activities, the program allows for the collective development of sociopolitical values, ethics, and cultural values thereby contributing to the development of aptitudes that are applied in the social lives of the participating students.
What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change? Taking into consideration the small amount of flexibility in terms of the types of innovations the public schools offer, which may be due to the rotation of their staff or the lack of investment in integrated educational activities, the school project is looking for sufficient involvement on behalf of the schools so that the educational activities of the formal schools are influenced by the educational principles of our work: learn (acquisition of new material), coexist (value development) and multiply (dissemination of what was
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing? The implementation of the project starts at the request of the public school. The social area and the sports program of the Foundation look for schools that have few or no extra-curricular activities that are offered. Close to 100 children and young people practice sports that are offered in periods when classes are not held. In each school, two young “monitors” that in addition to practicing the sport also participate in weekly meetings about technical issues (rules of the sport, tactics and other related issues), specific issues (ways to intervene in the community) and common issues (sporting events and community action issues). The structure of the project allows for the education of children and young people in matters related to sports fundamentals, value development, social skills and how to disseminate what they have learned in the community (family, school, church and community).
How do you plan to grow your innovation? The project can be implemented in any public school within the region served by the Foundation Gol de Letra as long as there is interest on behalf of the school as well as financial and physical resources for the execution and evaluation of the project. One of the objectives for continuing the activities initiated by the project is that those students who have participated in the program for one year will be able to develop other sporting activities in the community. Based on the 4 schools that have already participated in the project, there is a unanimous desire to continue the project’s activities within the school. This fact will continue the investment in young people who could potentially replicate and expand the sporting activities in the region.
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact. Disseminate a culture of sports and peace throughout the village of Albertina.
What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries? One of the verified impacts was the increase in the number of people that practiced sports within the region. Aside from this, the coordinators that observe the activities in the schools noted some changes in the school environment such as greater participation of the community and the families in the school and an increase in the responsibility of the students in the area of attendance. The close relationship with the schools and increased value given to public schools are the immediate benefits that have been observed, aside from the dissemination of sporting activities in the region served by Foundation Gol de Letra.
Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation? In the public schools who are already participating in the project, there has been increased receptivity to other educational proposals, including projects of the Foundation Gol de Letra and others that were developed by those young people that the project has trained. In addition, the schools have included members of the project in other initiatives such as end of year activities and parent-teacher meetings.
What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact? The monitoring and evaluation of the project on behalf of the professors or coordinators of the schools has been insufficient for allowing us to verify if the desired changes are occurring. Aside from this, in order for the dissemination of the sporting activities throughout the region is it necessary to expand the existing structure of the Program Open Game, in which the school project operates. This expansion requires financial and material investment.
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)? The school project was first financed through a private partnership that provided sufficient resources for 3 years of operation. In order for the project to occur, even if the material resources are already in the partner public schools, it is necessary to further invest in the project, at least in human resources. This way the educators and young people can be continually prepared to conduct their work. As an alternative to sustaining a project of this size, we are looking to diversify the sources of investment so that we do not become dependent on one source.
If known, provide information on your finances and organization. Annual Budget (School Project – Sports Action)
2007 – R$ 103,000.00 2008 – R$ 103,000.00 • Annual Revenue. Annual Revenue of the Project • Team: What is the potential demand for your innovation? In the Albertina region we have 19 public schools that serve the community where the project is being conducted. Given that the Foundation Gol de Letra São Paulo only covers this region, these schools represent the potential demand of the school project.
What are the main barriers to financial sustainability? The Foundation Gol de Letra develops its financial resources taking into consideration their medium and long term sustainability. It also seeks to diversify its sources of investment.
The current sources are: companies, institutes, foundations, international funds, products, individuals, events, foreign associations (Gol de Letra Italy and Gol de Letra France) The resources used for this initiative will focus on those partners that provide financing by way of the Law of Incentives for Sports (Lei de Incentivo ao Esporte) and also FUMCAD (Municipal Fund for the Rights of Children and What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story. The School Project – Sports Action, which is apart of the Open Game Program, began with the partnership with Foundation Gol de Letra, one year after the sports program of the organization was implemented. The consolidation of the project’s structure, which includes the practice of sports and the education of young people that will continue to develop activities in their community, allowed for the organization and the development of the project. The project was adopted quickly by the public schools. After the initial meeting with the school coordinators, we participated in parent-teacher meetings so that we could clear up and doubts about our work. There were some experiments as to the sports that were to be offered until finally we decided on offering two sports per school.
