Positioning in the Mosaic of solutions
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence? “More than an athlete we form sport citizens”
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field? The Brazilian Soccer Formation Center is a social insertion project that provides growth
opportunities to children and youngsters of limited economical resources through a sport and cultural environment. The CBFFS works with a strategy that uses sport (soccer) as the social insertion instrument because we firmly believe that a less unequal society can be constructed through education, culture and sport. Our vision is to promote the growth of all participants into the citizens of tomorrow: responsible, trust worthy, tolerant and respectful people that value differences and are supportive of those who have less economical means. This will be achieved with sport (soccer) as the developing vehicle since thanks to the practice of soccer the participants will be able to form themselves morally and psychologically. What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change? The major barriers that we encounter are basically financial. It is not easy to cover all of the
operating expenses. Currently we work with a large group of volunteers and we also do not have an own soccer field but are renting one at a high cost. Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing? We have structured the program in two “centres”:
In “Centre 1” we have what we call “private formation”. It is in this center where participants pay a monthly fee that is invested to support the Centre 2. Here we have approximately 30 students from different nationalities to promote cross cultural exchange. The “Centre 2” corresponds to the social program and it is here that we enroll the students from low socio economical conditions. The 2 centers however interact permanently because during the practices and activities we make no distinctions between one and the other. We have the Centers named as such only for denomination purposes. How do you plan to grow your innovation? We are currently evaluating the possibility of going outside of Dakar. We are seeking to get
private enterprise support/sponsoring to be able to pay the volunteers a minimum wage amd are also looking at available soccer fields in secondary cities in Senegal. Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact. Promote the social insertion of children and youngsters through the practice of soccer while
developing their self esteem by offering them the possibility of better living conditions thus reinforcing social growth through an environment of dialogue, team work, solidarity What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries? The beneficiaries of the project are all the youngsters and children of Senegal. We have
specifically three of the collaborators who were street children and they were alphabetized (taught to read and write) and are now working as instructors in the academy and they now also work in our small “Brazilian churrasqueria” restaurant as cooks and are also working in wood crafts shops.
Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation? Not only are the participants leraning to play a sport but they are also growing as
citizens. Through different partnerships we are able to offer parallel formations: reading and writing skills, art, information systems, etc. and also to promote the emergence of new sport professionals providing them with future job opportunities What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact? Our main barriers are financial. It is difficult to cover the expenses. At times we are forced
to cover the monthly expenses with profits made in the “churrasqueria” that we operate for friends. How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)? We cover the expenses by running a private formation centre (Centre 1) where the
participants pay a monthly fee that allows us to cover the needs of the children in Centre 2 (social group). If known, provide information on your finances and organization. Annual General cost

This project can be implemented in different countries where there is the need to help
children with scarce resources. The sport vehicle does not necessarily have to be soccer…it can be baseball, basketball, etc. What are the main barriers to financial sustainability? This field has not been completed
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story. I was a soccer player in Brazil and also a soccer coach. I made the coach formation in Sao
Paulo and am a certified coach of both the Brazilian Soccer Federation (CBF) and of the International Football Association (FIFA). In 2001 I took the initiative of establishing a soccer center in a country impacted by poverty after seeing how happy children and youngsters that were playing soccer were despite all the difficult conditions they lived in. It was very comforting to see how these children changed their expressions of despair to happy expressions - laughter was now on their faces. My wife, who has been my right hand in this project, and I selected Senegal as the country to set the base for this project because in the World Cup of 2002 after Senegal defeated France we were positively impacted/moved by the sentiments of joy of the Senegalese people and in Brazil the whole country became followers of “the lions of Teranga” who from practically nowhere had grown to defeat a strong team Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers marketing material. My main desire in participating is to be able to share this idea with others so that it can be
implemented elsewhere….a multiplying effect that help so many children in need for such a social program Contact Information:

Hey there,
sounds like an interesting venture. There are some points I'm not so sure about however.
Can you tell me more about the partnerships you have that enable children to learn to read and write?
Do you teach 'brazilian' football? Do you use music (samba) and dance (capoeira) to motivate and integrate the young people?
Is your program open for boys and girls?
I am interested in finding out some more.
Spirit of Football (our entry is here - http://www.changemakers.net/en-us/node/2211 ) is making a trip through Africa to the Opening Ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in 2010. We are interested in finding interesting organisations along the way that accept student volunteers and whom we can visit and work together with.
Maybe we can chat about.
Cheers,

It's good to see that the program has had positive results in the lives of your collaborators who were former participants in the program. Being able to demonstrate your success through more examples like this will increase your opportunities to attract financial donations.
Have you investigated partnering with local businesses and maybe even hospitals if your program could incorporate HIV/Aids education? Working together with these groups could not only help you increase your incoming funds, but also might provide additional educational and other necessary resources. Also, have you petitioned the families of the C1 participants to possibly sponsor one child as they pay for their child to attend? In this way, you would be able to maintain a balance between the C1 and C2 groups and still meet your economic needs.
Keep up the good work.
