What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence? Youth emancipation through skills development (Holiday makers)
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field? The new innovative program targets holiday makers who spent most of their time inactive, save for loitering around on streets of the city and towns in Kampala. The program aims at equipping their with development skills using sports which will help them to participate in developmental work and live a productive life.
What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change? Youth especially in holiday are left to relax especially after along time of academic struggles. When they get holidays, they spent most of the time idle which attracts them to get involved in vices like fornication, drug addiction, watching pornography which all puts them at the risk of getting HIV/AIDS/STDS so this area is not tapped at all.
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing? Organising competition matches for holiday makers in each parish. Trophies and other incentives like cow roasting to winners, gift which all attract the youth will be provided. On Competition matches, sensitization on HIV/prevention among tthe youth will be done,Improving hygiene and sanitation and encouraging them to do community service by helping the elderly and the disabled people .They will also be trained in other life skills which will make them to live a focused life.
How do you plan to grow your innovation? The innovation will be scaled up to embrace at first the whole district,District holiday competitions will be started and in future working with other stake holders, national sports completions for holiday makers will be organized. In all these competitions, sensitizations and training of youth on how they can use sports to fight poverty (talents development)will be done, more sensitization on HIV/AIDS prevention among the youth will be done.
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact. Social, moral, intellectual, sport oriented development of youth using sports
What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries? The innovation has so far trained 72 holiday makers in lungujja parish and Wakaliga Rubaga division Kampala district. The program targets youth

What is the potential demand for your innovation? 1.Parents
Our innovation has high demand from parents especially those of the working class who do not get time to be with their children due to the busy schedule of their work. When youth are given what to do in a youth friendly environment ,they would have missed from parents.Behaviour change is the major outcome. 2.Community. What are the main barriers to financial sustainability? Limited funds to finance the programs because the program relies on the mercy of well wishers and friends, and their contribution is always reliable which affects financial sustainability.
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story. Most youth are not introduced to social work like looking after the aged and the disabled. These groups are despised so much .Therefore youth need to be introduced to social activities that would rejuvenate their social responsibility which at a moment is becoming a rare commodity. Training the youth in life skills that would enable them build self confidence in themselves, help them know their role in society, with a responsible living. This would help them rejuvenate the lost social values and responsibility. So a program was thought which aimed at exploring youth’s potential for sustainable livelihood. This would best be achieved by attracting the youth through sports. Sports was seen as a vehicle to be used in promoting community development, at the same time helping the youth utilize their free time, protecting them in vices and at the same time promoting their talents.

Dear Ntale
I enjoyed reading about your project and congratulations in addressing such difficult issues like HIV/Aids and STDs with youth through sport. I was wondering if your program also targets girls and young women? Are they also involved in the sport activities and how are you addressing the specific needs and problems. I run Women Win, a new foundation that gives financial support to groups working to promote women and girls’ empowerment through sport. We have seen that sport is a very strong and successful tool, particularly with our partner organizations in Africa. Have you seen this too in Uganda?
Thanks in advance for your reply,

Your use of sports to educate youth, contribute to their health and safety, and build up within them respect and a sense of responsibility for the aged and disabled in their midst is praiseworthy, Ntale. We all are well counseled to try to do the same thing, no matter where we live or the sports with which we're involved.
