What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence? FAIR COMPETITION ADMINISTRATION SYSTEM: an innovative on-line management system for sport competitions and the digitalization of its communities.
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field? To date there isn’t a simple, standardized program to guide and assist grass-roots sporting competitions and their participating communities to get organized. There isn’t even a clear understanding of the people participating in the specific sport or their performances. FCAS was created to solve these issues, to digitize the participating sports community, and to provide a transparent and fair system in evaluating the participants under the common guidelines of Fair Competition.
The system is based on these fundamental principles: The standardization of the methodology of sport administration The digitalization of the participating community and its activities The decentralization of the administrative tasks, to enhance peer collaboration and community networking though the administration of the game The transparency of the administration process The implementation of an on-going assistance and support program for the users What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change? Over 90% of the estimated 1 billion people playing organized sport do so in grassroots organizations. These organizations lack guidance and their membership is mostly unknown. FCAS was developed to assist them to get properly organized while digitizing its membership and standardizing the evaluation of their performances. FCAS implements transparency in the administration, enhances communications, improves community participation, and provides technology and social education to sport communities
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing? We have developed the theory and the tools to implement the theory. To implement the theory we have developed a Fair Competition Manual and have developed an Internet- based set of solutions for the management of sporting communities. We begin with a seminar for sports organizations and their participating communities regarding the true meaning of a competition and the advent of technology as a facilitator for their tasks. We then provide them with our Fair Competition Administration Tools (FCAT) The digitalization includes three phases,
1- The digitalization of the competition, where the competition manager uses our tools to manage the results and statistics of the competition 2- The digitalization of the Membership, where the membership registers on-line and becomes an interactive virtual community of peers 3- The digitalization of the game, where members use the virtual community to administer the game and where FCAS embeds a Fair Competition Point system into the operation How do you plan to grow your innovation? In order to convert the sporting communities into virtual ones we need to start at the tip of the organizational pyramid: the sports governing body. We intend to build relationships with the world’s most important sporting organizations, to which we are proposing the introduction of new standards for the improvement of the sport they play not only using the technology, but introducing better administration and communication processes to properly assist their constituencies while improving the administration and fairness of their competitions. We are therefore planning to integrate the Program into the way sports are organized today, so we can grow with them as they play and administer sports under the rules of a Fair Competition.
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact. We want to help build a better world with innovative technology solutions that enables Fairness in sport and society in general
What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries? FCAS was developed to help bring fairness and transparency to sports and therefore it benefits the close to 1 billion people participating globally in organized competitions, either as players, coaches, or as administrator. We are in the first phase of implementation in several territories with tangible results. From serving as an information platform for the most sophisticated professional soccer competitions such as CONMEBOL’s “Copa Libertadores” or the “Copa Sud-Americana” (see www.conmebol.com,), to running a nationwide “tournament of Hispanic tournaments” such as the “Copa Alianza Hispana” in the U.S. (see www.Alianzadefutbol.net), to helping the most recreational and amateur competition such as ALAMADE (see http://www.almade.org, where the user will view a recently formed Venezuelan Mothers Association for the assistance of sports, an organization created by a group of mothers of football players to help promote the positive social values of football and sports in general).
Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation? We believe the implementation of FCAS will contribute to the reduction of corruption and violence in Sport, while teaching the right values of competition as a participatory democracy. Competition is, first and foremost, an association of adversaries to play a sport. The right understanding of its definition and its application within Fairness, has deep and positive consequences for society. Our FCAS can be of great support to teach the values of participatory democracy through sport
What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact? Giving its business model as a Virtual community, the implementation of our Fair Competition program needs a global roll-out of international significance. To accomplish that, we need the proper financing and the right strategic partnerships and institutional recognition. Indeed, we are actively looking for financing and pursuing formal recognition from institutions such as FIFA and the UN.
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)? We intend to make the service available at no initial cost to the sporting communities adopting our program. Our intention is to request corporate sponsorships to cover the operational core of the program, while trying to collect funds form international aid funds (UN, Unicef) and other possible revenue sources such as servicing fees and e-commerce. We want to imbed the service within the economy of the sport in the long term so the program is self-financed and so users can benefit as well from the marketing capabilities of our system.
If known, provide information on your finances and organization. Annual budget, depending on the size of the population serve is in the 1.3 to 2.5 millions US Dollars. Its annual revenue generated, depending on the model could be in between 1.5 to 3.5 Million per year (we are considering the donation of a fraction of the revenue to programs that enhance sport). Depending on the size of the population served, we will be managing a team of around 20 to 50 directly and 100 to 200 people indirectly world wide.
What is the potential demand for your innovation? The market is estimated to be I billion individuals who play organized sports in the world. Although we believe that the vast majority of sport communities are in need for a system such like ours, we are estimating that the true demand is 50% of that population. Having said that, we are then talking about a quite large segment of the world population, or the equivalent of over 500 million people. Soccer alone has over 250 Million people playing (as per FIFA).
What are the main barriers to financial sustainability? The lack of collaboration of the sport governing bodies, the slow adoption of new technology by the sporting communities, and the lack of long-term vision from potential sponsors are among the main barriers for our financial sustainability. Given the social impact of the program, one can also speak then of the lack of social investment form private or public organizations as one of the barriers.
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story. The Fair Competition Administration System is a long creative process that summarizes a life of learning and the search for solutions to improve sport and the society we live on through the application of technology. As a creative process, it started when I helped create the first-ever public demonstration of the Internet in sports with the official site for the World Cup during my tenure as VP of the USA 94 World Cup, evolved with the creation and implementation of the first-ever official Internet site for a Sport Federation with FIFA.com, and ends with a vision of using this experience and the progress of the Internet to create a system that enhances fairness in sports while empowering its participants to democratize its communities and facilitate equal opportunities for all people playing in the game. And to do so, teach people about the power of the Internet in assisting social organization and progress.
