What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence? Tennis for change, tennis for inclusion, tennis for life!
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field? Sport and social inclusion is not something new. Here in Brasília there are several other social projects that promote social inclusion through sport, but non of them uses tennis as its main sport.
The Future young tenists of Brazil project aims to promote social inclusion through the practice of tennis combined with fundamental and basic education to children and adolescents from poor communities around Brasilia. The project wants to offer young people the opportunity to work their emotions, develop limits, seek opportunities, discuss strategies, understand the meaning of rules, learn to move, choose alternatives with great agility and speed and coordinate actions of their body. What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change? Brasília, the capital city of Brazil is not diferent from most developing countries in the world. There are thousands of excluded young children and teenages that need help (oportunity), but do not know where to seek it.
The main barriers to overcome are: 1) Lack of sponsors 2) Lack of infrastructure Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing? 1) convince members of the Brasilia Country Club to open its facilities (infrastructure) for the development of this project;
2) find sponsors who would pay the construction of a Media Center where the students would learn computer/internet and that would pay the bills (teachers, sports materials such as uniform, racket, tennis balls, sun block, etc) 3) select students from public schools How do you plan to grow your innovation? We plan to grow this innovation by builting new tennis courts so more studants would be able to participate on the project. This innovation can also grow by envoving others association that have tennis courts and are idle used.
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact. This project aims to built better citizens for Brazil and for the World through the practice of tennis.
What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries? The beneficiaries will be students (aged 6 to 14) who will have tennis lesson and extra school activities such as computer classes, english and spanish.
As well students will have the chance to work their emotions, develop limits, seek oportunities, discuss strategies, understand the meaning of rules, learn to move, choose alternatives with great agility and speed and coordinate actions of their body.
Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation? This field has not been completed
What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact? The main problem is the lack of sponsorship.
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)? The Brasilian Congress have just aproved a law( Lei nº 11.438/2006) that alows companies (1%) and commom people(6%) to donate to projects that promote social inclusion through sport. This law allows companies 1% (one percent) and commom people (6%) to donate of its incomes to finance sports project such as this.
This project can also be financed by those cosidered wealth. Rich children can attend the activities promoted by the Institute, but the will need to pay a monthly fee. If known, provide information on your finances and organization. This field has not been completed
What is the potential demand for your innovation? I believe this inovation is very demanding.
There is a lack of Sport Institution on the area where we want to cover. The city of Gama has a population of 130.580 and 51 publics schools. There are 50.023 students which of 27.836 are the potential students (aged 6-14) we could hipoticaly help. There are 4 specific public schools on that area we would like to help. What are the main barriers to financial sustainability? The main barries to financial sustainbility is to convince companies to doante to this project.
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story. My name is Eduardo Oliva, I am 25, I am a lawyer and I am the youngest brother of triplets (Flávio and Sérgio Oliva). I learned tennis still young with my mother Maria José at Brasília Country Club.
During my childhood and teenage years I used to practice tennis almost every day. At the age of 17 I went to Skiatook, Oklahoma, U.S. to study at Skiatook High School where I kept play tennis. When I came back I had to stop playing cause I had to enter college. During college I stopped tennis for a while but I never gave up on the sport. After I graduated from college I have this ideia. When I saw this competicion I belived my dream could become true. My innovation is inspired on my brother Sérgio. He has inpired me with his hard work and perseverance. Sérgio has some disabilities (fisical problems), but never gave up on his deams. He overcame all his dificulties and recently won the paradrassage world championship in England (july/2007). His story really inpired me. I belive nothing is impossible. We can make the difference. It just depend on us. There are so many people that don't have any disability, but still are sad and lasy. We need to stop being selfish and start to change our reality. I also inspired myself on Guga (Gustavo Kuerten) social work. www.igk.org.br Please provide a personal bio.
