Focus of activity - Community Involvement
Year the initiative began - 2006
Positioning in the Mosaic of solutions
Description of Initiative - What is the main focus (products, services, etc.) of your initiative and how does it contribute to ending or preventing domestic violence? What principal aspect of domestic violence are you addressing? What activities does it involve for your organization? Who are your primary beneficiaries and target groups? The initiative started after a young girl tested HIV positive at WAMATA clinic in Tanzania. This young girl was raped by a lowyer unknowingly of the health status of this girl.Together with the radio presenter of NJIA PANDA programme of Radio Clouds fm in Tanzania we started the initiative of finding women who have suffered from indoor rape so that after interviewing them live on Every Sunday we will be showing the community what women and young girls are passing through. At the end of the radio programme the community members are allowed to call the radio station and give their views, ideas, comments and sometime material and financial support to the victim of indoor rape.
Innovation - Demonstrate how your approach differs from other programs in the field? Which specific components of your initiative are particularly effective, novel, or unique (e.g., the products and services, the technology used, the delivery, or financing mechanism)? Our approach of ending indoor rape differs from other approaches in the way we involve the community directly by allowing them to call the studio .We have been using HIV infected patients as a result of rape who are being serviced by WAMATA ORGANISATION.There are two things here the rapist may get HIV from a victim of rape or the rapist might infect the victim. So by doing interviews especially with women who were HIV positive before they were raped and yet they did infect the rapist, the community do discover the effect of rape.In the future we are planning to establish a full support programme for Rape victims involving psychosocial and financial support for education and small business projects and /or according to the needs of the victims.
Delivery Model - How does your initiative reach its target populations? What communications mechanism(s) do you have in place? How do you measure their impact? We use a radio programme called Njia Panda and a Newspaper called Familia where after conducting the interview with a victim of rape and allow people to call the studio and talk with the victim or giving their comments and support. The story is then published in the Familia Newspaper.
MEASURE OF IMPACT We have two methods of measuring the impact of the programme 1)More victims are coming to the Radio station more than the number we expected. This means there is community awareness of the problem and many victims wants to share their stories with people so that the effects of rape can be seen 2)THE NUMBER OF CALLERS-This have increased since the programme started,we receive many calls during and after the on air programme.People are offering financial support, psycosocial support and even lawyers are able to offer their support to the victims. For us this shows that our programme have impact on the community. Key Operational Partnerships - What key partnerships have you established to make your model possible or more efficient? Who are your partners (business, social, government, other) and what are their roles? How central are these partnerships for your initiative. Our partners are Radio Clouds fm,WAMATA organisation,Business firms like Pepsi and mobile phone service providers.
Financial Model - Which mechanisms do you have in place to ensure that your beneficiaries can afford your products or services? Do you have financial schemes or arrangements for low-income and marginalized populations? There are several sponsors of the on air radio programmes and people do call the studio using their own money.
Effectiveness - What has been the concrete impact of your project to date? How many people have benefited from your program in total? What policies, communities, or institutions have been influenced to make fundamental changes because of your work? After about 10 radio sessions we have succeded in making more victims to come to the Radio station more than the number we expected. This means there is community awareness of the problem and many victims wants to share their stories with people so that the effects of rape can be seen.THE NUMBER OF CALLERS-This have increased since the programme started,we receive many calls during and after the on air programme.People are offering financial support, psycosocial support and even lawyers are able to offer their support
Scaling up Strategy - What is your priority for the next 3 years and please describe why. Since we have just started the initiative we do think that we will be able to get more on -air radio time as one hour seem to be not enough. We expect to form a linkage with lawyers associations to help the victims in their case and we will continue collaborating with WAMATA organisations to offer financial, social and nutrition support to the victims
Origin of the Initiative - Tell the personal story that will help people connect to your work. How did the initiative start? Was there a particular individual or event driving the idea? Tell the reader the story behind the innovation. The initiative started afte Kahabi Isangula A VOLUNTEER at WAMATA clinic which is a clinic for management of oportunistic infection for HIV positive patient discovered some of HIV patient who were victims of indoor rape. The need to rise community awareness on effects of rape led to the use of NJIA PANDA radio programme to voluntarily interview the Victims and allowing people to call the studio and give their comments.
Main Obstacles to Scaling Up - List the two (2) main obstacles to scale up your innovation (policy, legal, organizational, people, financial, etc.)? 1)Inadequate financial support for on air radio programme
2) Social stigma to the victim of which led us not to use the true names of the victims during on air radio sessions Main Partnership Challenges - What are your major challenges with partnerships? (E.g., identification of partners, implementation of partnerships, relationship management, etc.) The partners support is not readily available when it is intensely needed.

it is a fruitfull idea to to introduce such kind of program, it wil help much in making the community especial those who ar victims. but what i think yu and me and the community in general have to think more widely on the roots causes of that offence act, rape.. why most of men ar doing such kind of stupid act? that is what graet deal can be found..i see this in a sence that, we will help those who are victims but the rate of women are abused day after day.
This is a startup idea, this means as we go on wiith the programme we will think of how we can fully support the rape victims beyond community awareness.Everything starts from somewhere
I think this is an incredibly innovative way to improve community awareness of rape, but I do not see the impact beyond community awareness. Is there any evidence that community awareness is leading to change in actions by community members? I think that the idea could be expanded out to a more community involved program, where rape victims are empowered and there was a job placement program, or something a bit more tangible.
