EngenderHealth is a leading international reproductive health organization working to improve the quality of health care in the world’s poorest communities.
In South Africa, Engenderhealth’s Men As Partners program implements the School and Community Action for Gender Equality (S-CAGE) Initiative, which builds the capacity of a partner organizations to carry out work in schools and communities, with both learners and community members. S-CAGE is based on a model of transforming gender norms among boys and girls. It assists them in reflecting on societal messages about masculinity and femininity and adopting more positive gender norms for their own health and well being. The program strives to encourage both young men and women to recognize the need to be responsible by taking charge of their lives and be able to make informed decisions. This is achieved through life skills workshops, intergenerational dialogues with elders, school-based campaigns, and community events.
